Description:

Despite higher dementia risk, Black and Hispanic Americans with dementia often go undiagnosed. When they are diagnosed, it is frequently late, which hampers care planning and lowers patient well-being. Medicare Advantage, which disproportionately enrolls minorities, has strong incentives to manage costs and deliver high-quality care for dementia populations. Conversely, Medicare Advantage’s incentives to restrict health care utilization may reduce the likelihood of clinical dementia diagnoses and receipt of needed clinical care for dementia populations. Using Medicare Advantage encounter data, this project will generate new evidence on how Medicare Advantage affect diagnosis and care among racial and ethnic minorities in the United States
